During the winter months pipes that are not properly insulated are prone to freeze when exposed to freezing temperatures.. This commonly happens in areas like an unheated garage or in exterior walls that are not properly insulated. Here are some basic tips to avoid frozen pipes and possibly keep them from bursting causing major damage to your home!

  1. Insulate Pipes – Wrap the pipes that run along the exterior of your home with insulation or heating tape. This will help prevent them from freezing this winter.
  2. Seal Cracks and Holes in Exterior Walls – Fixing any passages that cold air can seep through will conserve heat.. Prevent heat loss by using caulk or patching, this can either be a DIY project or hire a professional.
  3. Keep Doors to Unheated Areas Closed – Close off unused areas of your home by using weather stripping and keeping the door shut. This will prevent heat loss into those areas allowing the heat to stay where you need it in your living space..
  4. Let Taps Slowly Drip Water – If you have pipes that are prone to freeze this method may help you avoid a pipe bursting while you work to insulate them properly. Slow running water will not completely prevent a pipe from freezing however it may prevent it from bursting.

If you do unexpectedly have a pipe burst it has the potential to cause a lot of damage to your home, especially if you aren’t home when it happens.
