Insurance sometimes gets a bad rap for being boring, but these 6 insurance policies are anything but. We’ve all heard about celebrities who get body parts insured, and the odd musician who gets their fingers insured, but these are just out of this world strange insurance policies!
Loch Ness Monster Attacks – Yep, believe it or not, a Scottish cruise company took out a $1.5 million insurance policy in case of a Loch Ness monster attack. Of course there’s no proof that Nessie exists, but if she does, Jacobite Cruises is protected! Jacobite Cruise owner Freda Newton says, “I don’t know what the odds of this actually happening might be, but this is Loch Ness and how silly would we look if it did and we weren’t covered for it?”
Ghosts – Believe it or not you can take out ghost insurance to protect against violence or damages from ghosts. One hotel owner in England took out a policy after hearing from guests that they had seen ghosts on the premises. His policy stated that a payout would be made if someone was killed or permanently disabled by a ghost on the premises. Spooky, right?
Alien Abductions – If you’ve always been sure that UFOs exist, then we’ve got the insurance policy for you. Turns out all kinds of alien abduction insurance policies exist in the world. One company in Florida, St. Lawrence Agency, has reportedly sold 20,000 alien abduction policies, and another company in England has sold over 30,000. Apparently, the policy is redeemed if the person who purchased the insurance can prove they were abducted by aliens and returned to Earth.
Drunk Guest Insurance – Actually, this is usually covered in your homeowners’ insurance, but if you want to be extra sure, or you’re throwing a party elsewhere you can purchase “social host liquor liability coverage.” This policy covers costly damages, injuries, or expenses incurred by an intoxicated guest at a party you throw.
Multiple-birth insurance – Technology has come a very long way, but it’s still not perfect. Ultrasounds can leave information out, and couples can actually take out insurance in case they end up having twins or triplets, and so on. While this policy is not available to those undergoing fertility treatment, as long as the policy is taken out within 11 weeks following conception, the couple will receive a lump sum in the event of a multiple birth.
Bedbug Insurance – Bedbugs are horrible, terrible creatures, that take a very long time to exterminate. Believe it or not, they’re also not covered under standard homeowners’ or renters’ policies. So, many insurance companies offer bedbug insurance to cover the estimated $1,000 that it costs to get rid of the pests. Frequent hotel guests can also add a bedbug rider to their travel policy, in case they bring home critters from an overnight stay.
